Mega vswitch

Hola,

Did you enable DRS in either partially or fully automated mode? I'm guessing the reason the VM came back on the original host was that this one was most optimal for placement.

Hi everyone,

I would ask you about 1/8 G2 LTO-4 Ultrium 1760 Tape SAS Autoloader is compatible with VMware 4.1 or will not work normal.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Hakim,

Can you check whether the VM is still registered on the old datastore. You can check this by editing the VM settings, tab options. Another one to check is if the swapfile isn't still on the other datastore.

For iSCSI, in all my deployments I use the software adapter, I find that a hardware adapter with offload doesn't provide that much advantages over the software for the extra amount of money it costs.

The vCenter Server updates have to be downloaded from the VMware Web site. For details about how to upgrade your specific version, select the appropriate release in the VMware Documentation to find the vSphere Upgrade Guide.

If you are talking about patching the ESXi hosts, you need to have Update Manager installed in order to be able to patch the hosts from the vSphere Client.

Re: Why "Open in vSphere Web Client" function is not available for Organization Administrator?

your organization administrator is an external person in some situations.  if you have a completely internal cloud instance, the Org Admin might not be an IT person either.

The point of this cloud automation is to abstract details.  If an Organization Administrator has access (even just view access) to your Provider vDC in vSphere ... that's not really the point as it will expose details that they shouldn't really need to know.

If the person needs to see this, then they must be a system administrator.

Re: Win98SE guest in WS v10.0.1; can't upgrade virtual hardware

First of all just because a given OS appears in the New Virtual Machine Wizard does not means it's officially supported and official support for Windows 98 was depreciated in VMware Workstation 9 and is not officially supported in VMware Workstation 10.  Also Windows 98 cannot take full advantage of the virtual hardware version in VMware Workstation 10 as one aspect requires in box drivers that are not included in Windows 98 and are not available elsewhere.

That said, it would be a bit unrealistic to expect that an OS that is no longer supported in any way whatsoever by its manufacture that it will continue to be supported in a virtual environment or that drivers would be available for the latest hardware, physical or virtual.

Just keep in mind that just because a given OS appears in the New Virtual Machine Wizard whether officially supported or not will always work flawlessly without any issues, just like the virtualization software itself as it too has know issues and a bug or two and there's probably some design flaws and maybe something missing as well.  It's just the way it is!

Sharing the storage is possible with any vSphere edition. It's only the features like vMotion, HA, DRS, ... which are available depending on the edition you use.

Re: vSphere 5.5 VM console access errors / MKS connection terminated by server & MKS malformed repsonse from server

I have been running an ESXi 5.5 environment for 13 days now on BL460C Gen8 servers as well and today have started to get the MKS issues with all my VMs on all 4 hosts.  I can RDP to them all and still seem to have control of snapshots etc through the console as normal.

Feel slightly better that this is a known issue reading all these posts, but not that there is no known fix.

It is also causing havoc with my Veeam backups as some of the datastores are showing as locked, with the following error which I presume is related:

01/12/2013 05:59:35 :: Processing 'PHGBI1' Error: Client error: File does not exist or locked. VMFS path: [[Datastore05] PHGBI1/PHGBI1.vmx].

Please, try to download specified file using connection to the ESX server where the VM registered.

Failed to create NFC download stream. NFC path: [nfc://conn:phgvcentre.progressgroup.org.uk,nfchost:host-14,stg:datastore-31@PHGBI1/PHGBI1.vmx].

I am in the middle of migrating all my VMs over to the new environment but think I will get HP support involved before I go any further.

Some newbie questions about networking in ESXi

Hello,

I have some newbie questions about networking in ESXi

I have installed ESXi 5.5 on one server and I have these IP allocation :

192.168.1.16 /28

Subnet mask : 255.255.255.240

Gateway : 192.168.1.17

ESXi IP : 192.168.1.18

I decide to running 3 VMs on this server and each VM gives these IPs:

VM 1 : 192.168.1.19 , 192.168.1.20

VM 2 :192.168.1.21-29

VM 3 : 192.168.1.30

1.How can I disable change IP (Prevent IP Stealing) in VMs via ESXi?

For example VM 3 can’t use 192.168.1.25

Is there any way for assigning IPs to VMs without adding them into guest NIC?

2.Gateway IP in guest OS should be ESXi IP address or main gateway IP address?

3.Subnet mask for guest OS should be 255.255.255.240 or I have to calculate new subnet?

4.How can I prevent changing mac address in the guest OS via ESXi?

Thanks for your helps

Re: Upgrade from ESXi 5.1 to 5.5 (free) and stuck at "iodm loaded successfully"

I know this is a bit of an old post but I just like to add my experience. Perhaps it is useful for someone else.

I enabled (1394 (firewire) pass-through on the ESXi 5.5 host. Rebooting to make the change active, resulted in a what seemed to be a frozen ESXi host at boot.Just like described by the OP. It turned out that the 1394 had a dependency with the gfx chip, putting the main (only) gfx also on pass-through. The ESXi host continues loading, but the display freezes when the pass-through is being activated.

I was just being impatience waiting for the host to continue to boot. (I have to wait approximately 10 minutes longer because the host tries to find the remote maintenance controller which is currently not installed.) And because I also made some other changes that were BIOS related, I was looking into an other direction.

Could you try removing the VM from the inventory, by right clicking it and selecting remove from inventory:

Screen Shot 2013-12-01 at 13.59.27.png

Then browse to the datastore and register the VM to the inventory by right clicking the .vmx file and selecting add to inventory:

If I add your .vmx to my host, I only see one datastore being used. So try this and see what happens. The VM needs to be powered off to perform this.
