Re: Monitoring ESXi via SNMP

Looks like I can pull it out the data from hrStorageTable in the standard HOST-RESOURCES-MIB. There's an entry with a Description of "Real Memory" that seems to have the correct values.

vmware said, if the load balancing algorithim is set to IP hash, if I remove one nic from a vswitch, vms currently on that nic will all lose connectivity. Is there a workaround for this?

Creating the partition in VMFS3, delete and create in VMFS5 worked for me too.!!!

VM con load balancing

Ciao

Idee, suggerimenti, richieste, info ?

Hm, wouldn't seem like much of a team then. But seeing as you don't have network traffic yet, you can try this?

Hi Andre, I did what you suggested and definitely gave me hope to get this resolved. But I still have the same issue. I've attached the latest vmware.log file from the nested ESXi VM, can you please take a look and advise? The vhv.enable=TRUE entry is in there and I did reload the .vmx file before proceeding to install the OS.

Can you edit the VMware VM and set the monitor mode like this:

Not every CPU supports this feature so you need to give it a try, but it might help you.

The KB article of VMWare Player indicates the wrong location for config.ini

This KB article http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalId=1754 seems to indicate that for Windows 7 x64, the config.ini should be stored at C:\ProgramData\VMWare\VMware Player\config.ini yet the file I placed there isn't being read - I've checked the file access times.  And no, it's not a permissions problem.

So it looks like I need to create a fake VMware Workstation directory and put the config.ini there, even though I'm not using that product, or put it in the c:\users location.  Neither of these is indicated by the KB article.  So either update the KB article, or fix the bug in VMware Player.

Question 1:

There is the ESX version? And now there is only the ESXi version? I tried downloading the ESX and found I can just see the ESXi 5.5 .

Okay.

Question 2 :

If not longer more ESX version , as we do with ARCserve Backup to perform you need to install the agent to perform bakcup virtual machines ?

In training I did, I was informed that only makes ARCserve Backup product that is licensed ( paid ) . The reason is because the licensed product has an API that does not have the free .

I'm confused about that now .

Question 3 :

In my environment I have 5 VMWares hosts , each with a different version and some with others with ESX4 and ESXi 4 . I am installing a new machine with ESX5.5 to use the HA cluster .

What is recommended ? Upgrade these machines with older versions to 5.5 ? In the case of ESX4 , I'll have to upgrade to ESXi 5.5 ?

Or no need to upgrade , suffice to include this new vCenter and create the HA cluster ?

I understand I need vCenter 5.5 to manage ESXi 5.5 , but my doubt is only be able to use HA with vMotion . I'll get ? Or need to update my all my hosts to 5.5 ?

Seizing the opportunity . What 'll gain migrating my versions 4 to 5.5 ?

You will need to manage vCenter Server 5.5 ESXi 5.5 - you can also manage your ESX / ESXi 4.x hosts . Check the VMware products Interoperability Standards for support information here .

Question 4 :

Any recommendations for the use of virtual machines with iSCSI , knowing that thopout is much smaller than a FC (Fiber Chanel ) ? Ie keep od VMDKs OS on RAID place and the other unit in the datastore with ISCSI ? Any tips on best practice?

Got it . My doubt is because I read in a document vmware , which show that the thogpout ISCSI is much smaller than the FC ( Fiber Channel ) . My concern is that my VMs that use the ISCSI storage are database and with that , I'm worried , even using the best practices of isolating the iSCSI network with VLAN and using Gigabit .

Currently I have a Dell R410 server with RAID10 on local disks using 7 VMs that use the database. We bought a storage with 6TB for amplicado disk space and how thougpout are different , I am concerned about the best setup I could do .

Really the ISCSI is much slower than using local disks ?

Question 5 :

If I wanted to upgrade from version 4 , which is better ? Make updates 1 , 2 , 3 ... or make direct upgrade to version 5 ?

The problem of a new facility is the availability issue . I need another machine to keep running while the environment would make the new installation .

Thanks.

When I tried upgrading one of my X7DCA-L SuperMicro's, had this same problem happen.

HOWEVER: When you boot the machine, there is an option for "Recover Mode" (Ctrl-O or Alt-O). This restores the previous Hypervisor.

So I was able to roll back to working networking and use vSphere to upload to datastore, making it nice and simple.

Not sure if I want to try 5.5.

VMware Horizon View 5.3 Feature Pack 1 Release Notes

Can you please verify the following?

Known issues:

After you install Windows 7 MMR with the Remote Experience Agent installer, you must restart the View Agent service or restart the desktop operating system to initiate Windows 7 multimedia redirection.

The VMware Update servers are notoriously problematic.  Download the entire binary of WS 10.01 and run the installer.  See if that helps.  Check the MD5sum for verification of the file.

Adding the AD domain to the Identity sources is step one. Did you also do step two, setting permissions for the AD users/groups on the vCenter Server object?

Can you try removing the VMware tools? I've seen strange behaviour like this one more time. Ended up being the tools installed incorrectly. So remove them and see if that helps.

Thanks for reply, so I should install 10.01 on 10 without uninstalling it first. How can I check MD5sum?

I've tried that too tomtom91. But it didnt help.

I have tried using the Web Client to hopefully be able to expose the h/w virtualization bits to the nested hosts. I have ensured the h/w version is 9 and the GOS is ESXi 5.x, but I still am unable to expose h/w virtualization to the nested hosts.
