Re: Virtual Disk Space Error

$

Running virtual machines with thin provisioned disks always requires monitoring to avoid situation like the one here. Anyway, once a virtual machine is powered on, a swap file (.vswp) is created in the VM's folder on the datastore with the size of the provisioned memory (minus reservation). Assuming you do not have any reservations configured, this swap file would require 12GB. Adding up the used disk space you mentioned plus the swap space for the virtual machines will most likely fill the datastore.Assuming this is a standalone ESXi host (i.e. not part of a cluster), you could - provided you have enough physical memory - configure memory reservations for the VMs to reduce the size of the swap file. This may not be a long term solution, but will help you to run the VM's for some time until you will have the chance to add additional space.

If you are unsure, please don't edit the settings and provide the required information (physical memory, assigned memory for each of the 3 VMs ) to find out what can be done.

Although I don't think the VM's are running with active snapshots, please double-check this using the Datastore Browser to see whether there are snapshot files (<vmnmae>-00000x.vmdk) in the VM's folders.

Re: Excessive PowerCLI console output

The PowerShell output formatter decides which output format (defined in the ps1xml file) it will use.

This depends, but not alone, if the output goes to screen or not.

The easiest way to force a specific format, is to use one of the format cmdlets.

If you put in your script

get-vm "miragexp1" | start-vm | Format-Table

you should be seeing the same columns as you see on screen.

It looks as if Get-Datastore $DATA_SOURCE is returning more than 1 object.

What does it return when you execute it from the prompt ?

What did you enter as the datastore name? Try simply entering the name without brackets..

You mentioned that this was a bridged network before. Just to rule that out, you don't use 10.x.x.x addresses in the physical network, do you? And was there a special reason for changing the NAT network from a 192.168.x.x subnet to the 10.0.0.x subnet? I read a couple of posts where user had issues after using subnets other than 192.168.x.x for NAT, so not sure whether this could cause the issue!?

No, I use 192.168.1.x in my physical network. So you think there's an issue with using the 10.0.0.0 address space, maybe a bug?

There's no special reason why I use the 10.0.0.0 space so I can try and switch to a 192.168.2.x space and see what happens.

I'll post back in a bit with my results.

Using Mirage and Horizon View together

Hi All - Im new to Horizon/Mirage

I'm exploring the ability to support a workgroup concept for mobile power users...the idea is to provision/deprovision cloud based vdi workgroups (built on a P2V of an existing machine, or some rules determined subset of the user data)...these workgroup members are not assumed local to each other, and need to disconnect frequently...this work group needs data to be kept synchronized as much as is possible.  The apps that need to work locally will be setup to do so, and their data needs well defined.

The idea is to provide a linked vdi machine - physical pc platform, if you will

for example, If a user was connected, and was performing functions on the VDI desktop (use as primary GUI when connected), how difficult would it be to setup a sync w/ dashboard that showed a GREEN LIGHT, to show synchronization complete and ready for disconnect, IMPLYING that NOW, the user can user the physical End User laptop, with the updated data from the VM session

I'm not looking to conceptually vMotion these things (which is the nirvana), just keep a VDI session (built from a P2V) and a physical desktop in close sync (how close can we get?)

what is the art of the possible?

(whether it's VDI<->PC, or some intermediate data protection scheme doesn't matter)

Answering my own question...

DSwitch-DVUplinks / Manage / Ports. Click the arrow at the upper left - "Start Monitoring Port State".

All green now.

vDS Design / DVUplinks Ethernet Symbol Color

We're migrating to vDS. All hosts have 4 physical adapters. Our networking config has always been two vSwitches. vSwitch0 for Management (vmnic0 active, vmnic1 standby) and vMotion (vmnic1 active, vmnic0 standby), and vSwitch1 for virtual machines (vmnic2 and vmnic3 active). This has served us well for many years.

The vDS migration seems fairly straightforward. We've created a single DSwitch for ease of management (4 uplinks), and created distributed port groups. Each distributed port group uses a VLAN, with the exception of the Management port group. Our Management network is the default untagged network on each vmnic. We've gone with the default settings everywhere, with the exception that each port group has been modified with the correct teaming and failover order as listed above.

We have 3 clusters in our environment, with anywhere from 7 to 14 hosts each. Not all virtual machine VLANs are visible on every single vmnic. For example, cluster 1 sees VLAN 2, 3, and 9, but cluster 2 only sees VLAN 5, and 9. However, the appropriate host vmnic has / will be assigned to the appropriate uplink for each distributed port group / VLAN that it can see.

We started our migration last week with only Management and vMotion. This has gone well, with 12 hosts migrated so far. Once this phase is complete, we'll perform our virtual machine migration over a single night.

Finally, on to our problem! Everything seems to be functioning normally with Management and vMotion. All hosts are visible, respond to a ping, are joined and participating in the cluster, with functional vMotion. However, we see inconsistent Ethernet icon colors in the DVUplink Ethernet symbols. Some are green, some are blank (white). Some hosts have 1 white and 1 green. Some have 2 green. Some have 2 white. Yes, the 2 white hosts are functioning normally! The information link for every single port shows connected. What is the deal?

Performance Overview and Plugins do not work

$

Dear All,

as the topic mentions: I can not open the performance overview tabs within the vSphere client and the vSphere Client can not download the plug-ins (e.g. the vCenter Service Status plug in). After searching the web for a while I can not find anything wrong in my configuration. The root cause seems seems to be that the tomcat does not listen on port 8443. What could be the reason for this?

C:\Users\Administrator>netstat -ano | findstr .8005

  TCP    127.0.0.1:8005         0.0.0.0:0              ABHÖREN         101160

C:\Users\Administrator>netstat -ano | findstr .8009

C:\Users\Administrator>netstat -ano | findstr .8080

  TCP    127.0.0.1:8080         0.0.0.0:0              ABHÖREN         101160

C:\Users\Administrator>netstat -ano | findstr .8443

  TCP    0.0.0.0:18443          0.0.0.0:0              ABHÖREN         4

  TCP    [::]:18443             [::]:0                 ABHÖREN         4

The process behind port 18443 does not work, because it returns a 404 for every URL on that port.

I'll attach the server.xml from my tomcat conf. I'm running vSphere 4.1.0 on a Windows 2008 R2 Server.

Thank you in advance!

Minimum VMware license required if I use Unidesk?

Hello,

I'm not clear if the Horizon Standard Suite is more than what I need or if it is not enough for my environment.  I wonder if there is cheaper pricing available separately without the suite.

I am currently testing a third-party Unidesk VDI solultion but use Horizon View Administrator 6.0 to connect my users.  Horizon will just list the desktops that I created from Unidesk and my users will connect via the View client to any available non-persistent desktop.  I occassionally will log into the View Adminstrator to see which desktops users are logged into and log them out.  I won't be using any of the other bells and whistles.

What I have.

-3 ESXi 5.5 hosts with 2 sockets per host.  This will need a vCenter license.

-Horizon View with 61 powered-on desktops.  41 users will be connected concurrently and 20 desktops will be idle standby.

So what do I need and in what quantities?

Re: Concerned with latency with NFS and SAN

Poor storage performance is generally the result of high I/O latency. vCenter or esxtop will report the various latencies at each level in the storage stack from the VM down to the storage hardware.  vCenter cannot provide information for the actual latency seen by the application since that includes the latency at the Guest OS and the application itself, and these items are not visible to vCenter. vCenter can report on the following storage stack I/O latencies in vSphere.

Storage Stack Components in a vSphere environment

LatencyInStorageStack

GAVG (Guest Average Latency) total latency as seen from vSphere

KAVG (Kernel Average Latency) time an I/O request spent waiting inside the vSphere storage stack.

QAVG (Queue Average latency) time spent waiting in a queue inside the vSphere Storage Stack.

DAVG (Device Average Latency) latency coming from the physical hardware, HBA and Storage device.

To provide some rough guidance, for most application workloads (typically 8k I/O size, 80% Random, 80% Read) we generally say anything greater than 20 to 30 ms of I/O Latency may be a performance concern. Of course as with all things performance related some applications are more sensitive to I/O latency then others so the 20-30ms guidance is a rough guidance rather than a hard rule. So we expect that GAVG or total latency as seen from vCenter should be less than 20 to 30 ms.  as seen in the picture, GAVG is made up of KAVG and DAVG.  Ideally we would like all our I/O to quickly get out on to the wire and thus spend no significant amount of time just sitting in the vSphere storage stack,  so we would ideally like to see KAVG very low.  As a rough guideline KAVG should usual be 0 ms and anything greater than 2ms may be an indicator of a performance issue.

So what are the rule of thumb indicators of bad storage performance?

•             High Device Latency: Device Average Latency (DAVG) consistently greater than 20 to 30 ms may cause a performance problem for your typical application.

•             High Kernel Latency: Kernel Average Latency (KAVG) should usually be 0 in an ideal environment, but anything greater than 2 ms may be a performance problem.

So what can cause bad storage performance and how to address it, well that is for next time…

And as a side note:  Check out your local VMUG (VMware User Group).  The VMUG community has more than 75,000 members with more than 180 local groups across 32 countries.  Many local area VMUGS have free user conferences that are a great opportunity to learn from in-depth technical sessions, demonstrations and exhibits and network with other VMware customers and partners. That is where I’ll be this week, presenting Storage Troubleshooting and Performance Best Practices at the Denver VMUG.
